While Sunbathers Escaped Violence, Popular Image Depicts Rescuer Running ‘All Out’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her personal space. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous local residents, detected loud noises echoing around the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw told her trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a couple who had run up the incline still dripping wet, she became aware of someone moving up at her rear. The person was a rescuer, sprinting towards Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone heading in the direction that the crowd was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and without footwear … He was sprinting at something that certainly every fibre in your being would instruct you to go in the reverse way.

“Without a second thought, but just totally full throttle racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism In the Wake of Chaos

The image Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many instances of valour in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, police and paramedics treating dozens of victims.

Local Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was just one of many to be shared by the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the site of the incident serving as a temporary hospital. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, for instance going into the ocean to assist people needing help.

Following the events, statements of appreciation flooded in. An online statement shared gratitude for the individuals who showed that “kindness will always overcome darkness”.

The squad of beach patrol later shared a statement, saying they were “processing what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your kind words and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the compassion directed at our personnel,” the organization stated. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it supports those impacted.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many permanent lifeguards, stated that the team rose to the occasion from the instant the violence commenced right into late that night.

“There have been so many moving stories, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” said a mayor.

“The team show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned shores safe for visitors, but what we saw on Sunday should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the horror of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is important that we focus on just how much positivity we have observed in the presence of such darkness.”
