We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together exists a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.
An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
