Israelis have come together throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.

The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership postponed official remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the terms of the agreement.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an night meeting of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official stated the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.

He added that the talks are "challenging and have still not deliver any significant progress," but noted that mediators are working hard to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Points in Discussions

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The trade of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid distribution
  • Future management of the region

Public Sentiment

In the city's memorial area previously, young a woman - whose brother lived through the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place feels like home any longer and until every captive come back no one will have peace of mind."

"When we see all home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence recover," she continued.

In front of the prime minister's home in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.

Protester one woman stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of Israelis prefer the war to finish in exchange for the release of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the area of the gathering, mourners assembled to remember the victims.

From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the morning of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality districts and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.

"As the dusk comes, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.

"My family are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Continuously we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."

Health Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area reported it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the south region of that area indicated additional victims had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get assistance to the south, medical staff stated.

The territory's health ministry reported 25 of the {territ
