The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
