PSG Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the prestigious trophy on 14 different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille fired two times late to take a surprise advantage. Initially, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the dying moments to send the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving decisive kicks from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the past 13 years.
