Prison Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life in Prison
He contested the legal system and justice prevailed.
Two months following being handed a 27-year sentence for attempting to “annihilate” Brazil’s democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems destined for incarceration.
Expected Incarceration
The adjudicated coup-monger – who's been living under house arrest in his mansion while a set of legal procedures and appeals proceed – is widely expected to be jailed in the next few days, amid growing rumors that he will be moved to a notorious top-security prison.
Previous Comments on Convicts
During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the far-right ex- soldier showed minimal sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.
“For what reason must we provide these scoundrels a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be fucked, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”
At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to wind up in prison, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or rob.”
Jail Facility Speculation
Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, a group of four this week toured the prison in an obvious bid to dissuade the supreme court from banishing him there.
Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, said he predicted the 70-year-old figure to be jailed in the following week and a half and feared his location could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe digestive issues – the consequence of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 presidential campaign – meant it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His condition is very grave. He won’t be able to manage if they take him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” said the senator, who also worried about cramped cells and the quality of inmate food.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells holding four dozen inmates: “It's virtually one square meter per inmate.
“We conversed to the convicts and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the terrible meals,” continued the senator.
Backers Voice Concerns
Lucas is not the lone figure voicing opinions ahead of the one-time head of state's expected incarceration.
Penning in a prominent newspaper, one more backer, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the largest unfairness in its history”.
“This is an wrong that erodes the souls of many people in Brazil,” he stated.
Divided Popular Opinion
This could be correct considering the substantial backing Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. However his expected incarceration has also gladdened the hearts of numerous individuals who believe he should be incarcerated for planning to stop his successor from taking power – and even plotting to have him killed.
Reimont Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent president's political party, said: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be put in isolation. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to get proper treatment – but respectful treatment in prison. He cannot persist being his self-appointed guard for his whole life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time applauding the tough treatment of prisoners, had unexpectedly realized to their entitlements. “Recently has the extreme right – which has repeatedly claimed that human rights were not for criminals – chosen to visit a penitentiary to find out what conditions are really like,” he stated.
“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, insulting treatment”.
Likely Prison Conditions
Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about thousands of prisoners, his more likely location seems to be a nearby penitentiary for officers and other “special” detainees called Papudinha (Little Papuda).
The accommodations are much more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while occupying the spectacular leader's home, approximately 20 kilometers away.
According to sources, the room Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – approximately the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 sq metre WC with a shower and a 12 sq metre balcony. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a set and even a minibar in his cell as long as they were supplied by his family,” information suggested.
Partisan Responses
He denounced the rumoured proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his fate in the {
