The 2026 Formula 1 cars are set to be lighter, more agile and sustainable than this year.

The world of Formula 1 has unveiled the simplified terminology that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its new 2026 regulations.

The championship is embarking on what is potentially the biggest regulation change in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the required adoption of fully sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a greatly enhanced battery power, driving major innovations in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

Over a race distance, pilots will tactically deploy electrical energy – including during qualifying laps – to extract the peak result.

Extensive fan consultation were undertaken with a mix of viewers, including long-time followers and newcomers, to determine which terminology would make things clearer of the central aspects of the new regulations.

The stated goal was to make a set of intricate technical aspects of the sport as straightforward as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for some systems – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the active aerodynamics – have been phased out in favor of intuitive labels that clearly indicate the real-world effect of the innovation.

Exploring the New Tech

The FIA states that racers will have increased agency to choose strategies regarding energy deployment, harvesting, and conservation.

The new regulations introduce a set of functions that will be shown on television graphics to enhance the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This replaces the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a surge of additional ERS power deployable when a car is close behind the vehicle in front to assist with an overtake.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a manual battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during offensive or defensive moves. It delivers the pilot maximum power at the click of a switch.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be managed carefully, as the total energy is strictly limited.

  • Active Aero: Both the nose and rear wings adjust their angles – opening on the high-speed sections for reduced drag and top speed, and closing in the turns for peak grip.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can harvest energy with energy harvested under braking, or during throttle lift at the end of straights or in certain corners where only limited engine output is used.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The 2026 cars will be more compact and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a distance between axles shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight reduced by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is expected to drop by approximately a significant margin, although teams will undoubtedly recover some as they refine their designs.

Drag has been cut by 40%. The cars will employ moveable wing elements – both wings will open on the straights to reduce drag and increase straightline speed and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Tyres will retain the current rim size, but the tyres themselves will be reduced in width, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30mm at the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The new power units will have an near-equal balance in power produced by the internal combustion engine and the electrical system, a rise from about 20% battery contribution this year.

The energy recovery system is simplified through the removal of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the intricate and expensive component that generated electricity from the exhaust turbo.

All vehicles will be required to run on 100% sustainable fuel, created from plant-based materials or synthetic industrial processes.
