Forecasters are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are advised to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed Amid Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are expected to go ahead, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," stated the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are expected to be low, meaning additional clothing a necessity, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday

As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Alerts Activated

In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this signified the weather could to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
