Long-Forgotten Johann Sebastian Bach Compositions Presented for First-Ever Performance in Three Centuries
Recently identified musical pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach have been unveiled and performed in the central European country for the first time in 320 years.
Germany's Cultural Affairs Minister Wolfram Weimer labeled the discovery of the two compositions a "great moment for the world of music".
They initially attracted notice of Peter Wollny in 1992 when he was cataloguing historical musical documents at the Brussels archive.
The musical compositions - the Chaconne in D minor and G minor Chaconne - were dating unknown and without attribution. The scholar spent the subsequent thirty years working to authenticate the identity of the pieces.
Landmark Presentation
They were performed at the historic Leipzig church in the eastern German municipality, where Bach is interred and where he served as a church musician for 27 years.
The pair of works were performed by organist from the Netherlands the musical performer, who said he was proud to be able to play them for the premiere in three hundred twenty years.
He said the pieces were "remarkably sophisticated" and would be "a great asset for contemporary organ players, as they are also well-suited for smaller organs".
Cultural Relevance
They are thought to have been created early in Bach's career, when he was employed as an organ teacher in the town of the German town in the German region.
The researcher, who is now the director of the Bach research center in Leipzig, said they exhibited several qualities unique to the composer.
"Musically, the compositions also feature characteristics that can be identified in Bach's works from that time, but not in those of other musicians," he said.
They are thought to have been written down in 1705 by one of Bach's pupils, Salomon Günther John.
At a revealing of the pieces, Mr Wollny said he was "almost completely confident that Bach had written the two compositions" and they have now been included into the official catalogue of his musical output.
