The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
