India's capital Wakes Up to Hazardous Smog Following Celebrations

On Tuesday morning residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with breathing extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" level.

Extremely High Air Quality Readings

Multiple areas of the city registered an air quality index above 500, which represents ten times the healthy threshold established by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1800, equating to 15-20x above acceptable limits.

Fireworks Ban and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly haze that blankets the capital as colder weather approaches.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed local government petitioned the supreme court to seek a easing of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment".

Court Verdict and Reality

To the disappointment of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities approved the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable disregard of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Several recording stations throughout the capital recorded air quality spiking around midnight to extremely hazardous measurements seen during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Implications

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also sparked a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab pointing to declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants traveling from India following the events.

Chronic Environmental Problem

The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have remained as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near Diwali, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Various Contamination Contributors

The problem in the capital is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring regions of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating dangerous smog that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.

Health and Economic Toll

Public health and economic toll on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple investigations.

These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.

The pollution is projected to be causing ten thousand untimely fatalities annually in Delhi.
