Sir Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not seeking a return to football management, noting that it would be tough to recreate the unique sense of purpose he experienced as head of the Three Lions.

Southgate expressed his aim to dedicate his efforts toward supporting the next generation and combating what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook currently prevalent in the country.

Embracing Different Paths Outside of Football

During a broadcast discussion, Southgate was prompted regarding talk linking him with vacant management roles in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Commitment to Mentorship

Ahead of the publication of his forthcoming publication, his new work on leadership, Southgate shared that he is “very passionate” about providing role models for teenagers, drawing on experiences from his time as head coach of the national side between 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

He feels that his time coaching England, during which the team shifted from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds broader applications.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he noted. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Raising Children and Guiding Young People

Speaking from his experience as a father, he remarked: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Togetherness Beyond Discord

He asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often highlights division.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is expected to offer additional perspectives on management and national identity drawn from his notable career.
