Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site from which the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
