Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators

The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”

Jones additionally clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent examples include:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

Recent Issues and Media Attention

The incident follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who faced significant criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his role in building the Dallas franchise into the globe’s highest-worth athletic organization, despite its recent title shortcomings.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones highlights its ongoing effort to uphold professional conduct among all team officials, regardless of their status or wealth.
