The British tennis star achieved the most important victory of his career by coming back from a set down to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this win marks Norrie's initial victory over a current world No 1.

"Massive. Extremely important for me," said Norrie, who is now the newest British man in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Returning from health issues last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifying rounds here. I just tried to embrace my performance in the closing months of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the most significant win of my career, my maiden triumph over the global number one and likely the strongest competitor in the world right now."

The British player, seeded No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight Masters 1000 victories, which represented the best series of performances in the Spaniard's young career.

The top seed seemed to be advancing smoothly to a win early on as he sailed in the first set. Yet, the British contender gradually battled back into contention by serving with greater precision and pulling the Spanish opponent into prolonged, physical exchanges. His persistent shot tolerance and dependability steadily made an impact.

During large parts of the match, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he struggled badly to locate his rhythm off his groundstrokes. The rising talent appeared particularly uncomfortable striking his forehand, which has been the most effective stroke in the sport for a large part of this season, producing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a overall of 54 errors. Across the net, Norrie presented Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, keeping up his consistency, fitness and penetration throughout while delivering effective serves and picking his spots to force himself forward and strike effectively.
