British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
This news arrives shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
