Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
