US air traffic controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks due to weather and other issues.

More than 3,000 American flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," he remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their worries directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports indicated travel would be held up due to a lack of employees - among the peak after the shutdown began.

The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the number of planes in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," the official said.

On that day, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, causing interruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA notice was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Airport, though, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the FAA said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airport in the country, could encounter problems from low staffing later in the day.

The agency advised travelers in the state to consult carriers about updated departure times.

The issue precedes Game 3 of the championship, which is due to be played in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest periods to fly in the United States.

Strain on US air travel helped end a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had reached its fifth week and affected flight services, including pilot training.

It led several flight controllers to remain absent on the same day on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

On that date, the former president, who at the period was in his initial presidency as president, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the federal closure after 35 days.
